Pimpbot's race tips

3/23/07 News News News. Well, my wife and I had our baby 5 weeks early. He's now 7 weeks old. A good healthy boy with lungs like pool toys. Cute as a button. I'm already building the bike in my mind.

This upcoming Saturday (3/24/07) our very own Dan'ger will be doing a BTCEB Kiosk at Wildcat/Tilden. Berkeley Mike will be hosting a ride at 9am.

So what else happened around here in the last six months?

I have another new addition to the family. I bought a Redline MonoCog29er. Dang, this bike is fun. Cheap date kinda fun. It's cheap, there is no mistaking that... but it's so fun I can overlook many of the refinements this bike lacks, like light weight. A rigid singlespeed at 27.5 pounds, it weighs more than my Stumpjumper with disc brakes, full suspension and gears. But it has it where it counts: Fun. Like OMFG fun. I'm actually working on the biggest sin of all for a singlespeed. I'm working on a setup for gears that can easily be taken on and off for rides more epic than my fat ass can handle without gears.

Sea Otter is coming up. At 10 pounds over my last year's race weight due to baby activities, I'm going to get pounded. It's gonna hurt. Good thing I upgraded to Sport, eh? That's okay, because it will still be a blast.

I dusted off my racerboy hardtail for the first time in six months and rode it around Lake Chabot. When I got there, the trial patrol guys along with OPD and the sheriff's dep't were looking for some suspicious guy who was spotted with a gun case or something. Heck, there is a rifle range out there, so a gun case shouldn't be too out of sorts.

I was hammering for the first hour or so. The hardtail is amazing for climbing. I was in the big ring for a good part of the time. Maybe I won't do too badly at SO.

My headset failed about halfway through the ride. Pedaling out of the saddle on the climbs, it was creaking like mad. Worse,  the bars were starting to have a good amount of stiction, which made steering and balance a bit harder. Also, the front derailleur refused to drop the chain into granny gear. With a turn of a screwdriver, that was fixed in 30 seconds. Apart from that, the bike felt great. I'm actually feeling pretty good about the upcoming SOC.

Speaking of SOC, there was a bit of a dust-up regarding the women's singlespeed class. They were going to run the beginner women and sport women's classes on the beginner XC racecourse... 10 miles instead of the 19 mile XC course for the men's sport class. Either that, or the women could have upgraded to expert class for a real ride, but they do 40 miles. Ouch! Can you imagine the $50-ish entry fee to ride 10 miles for sport class? So many people complained, the SOC officials decided to put the sport women's SS on the 19 mile XC course. They should have done that in the first place. Heck, why not have SS beginner women on the 19 mile course too? My take is if somebody is into singlespeeding in the first place, they are at least a little hardcore... probably hardcore enough to handle 19 miles. Anybody into singlespeeding has been riding at least a few years, right? I'm starting to wonder if anybody over at SOC planning even rides a bike.

Whoa. Been a  while, eh? Tuesday night ride tomorrow night (9/26). Miles, smiles, the usual. Bring lights. The sun is going down right about  when we crest the first climb. 6:30 start time. Don't be late! Usual stuff applies, as listed to the right. ->

9/17/06 Ales for Trails was a blast. Too bad folks forgot important pieces of gear. Dan'ger, SlideMon and a few others (sorry, I missed your names) did a bunch of steep miles up and down. Good stuff at China Camp, and over the hill if you look for it. Good trails followed by roasted pork, beer and other goodies. I bought a bunch of raffle tix, went home empty handed, but with a full belly and soul. Good times.

I boneheadedly left my camera behind, or I'd post pix. Some good folks who ran the event are sending me the camera. As soon as it comes back, I'll post pix.

5/25/06 Ain't that a badda bitch? Dang! I think a whole industry oughta buy a frickin clue. I mean, this is really huge. Two hundred cyclist may get caught up in the dragnet. I wonder what this is going to do to the Tour? Sucks to be Urlich right about now. He's not named yet, but I'll bet pot brownies to poundcake it's coming.

Another 24hoa in the books. It was a good race, but we didn't exactly break any records. No injuries, no mechanicals, no fights, good times, and that's what matters most. We came, we rode, we kicked ass, but didn't hurt ourselves in the process.... well except for K-Max, that masochistic bastid. He did it on a Singlespeed. Rounding out the team: Ogre, Imjps, and JRM. We managed 23 laps with about 20 minutes to spare with Imjps bringing the glory lap home. Big thanks again to Biggs and Fiona for helping out.

Pics to follow, but I didn't take many... too busy racing. I even took some video, but we'll see if it is worth posting.

5/13/2006 - Save Mount Diablo / Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay took a ride in the parks around the southern portion of Mt. Diablo. We started near the Pleasanton/Danville border and climbed many hills before looping down the legal Oyster Point singletrack trail. This is a spectacular 4 mile section of singletrack.

5/9/2006 - We rode a similar route to last week except that we went for a longer route to the North-West corner of the park and rode the legal singletrack near Bear Creek.

5/6/2006 - Save Mount Diablo / Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay took a ride at Black Diamond Mines. We started in Clayton and worked our way clear over to Antioch before turning around. The cows had done a job of making post holes in the trails. Had it not been for my FS, I would be a very sore biker!

5/2/2006 - First official Briones Mafia Night Ride of 2006 came late into the year due to the intense amounts of rain we had all winter and into spring! Check Dan'ger's Maps for trail conditions.

4/30/2006 - Hey, Mafiosos and Mafiosas! Tuesday night rides are starting up again. After the crazy rains this winter, Briones was a mucky mess. The recent warm weather and conspicuous lack of rain might mean that the place is actually rideable... and better yet, night rideable! Woo Hoo!!

Park on Sage Drive (Map link) and meet at the Alhambra parking lot this Tuesday (May 2nd) at 6:00 PM. Bring lights, lube, legs and lungs. Luna bars are good, too.

If all goes well, we'll start this up as a weekly thing.

4/9/2006 - Sea Otter came and went... and it was a good one. Dan'ger peer pressured me to upgrade to sport, and he was right, I was due. Three years as a Beginner was getting embarassing... not that I was sandbagging and smoking anybody (that's for sure). I only podiumed once, but I was feeling like a non-beginner at this point.

I did a warm-up race in the CCCX series a couple weekends before, and scored a 23rd out of 24 riders. I was not looking great, but it was still a good race. I was able to turn and burn the whole time, no mechanicals, bike felt great... I was just up against faster racers than I'm used to... and again, I don't really 'train'.

So SOC came. Dan'ger (remember, the guy who guilt tripped me in the first place?) managed to toe the line for Sport class the morning  of... (with Son of Dan'ger in tow, fresh off the plane from the East Coast) working on 3 hours sleep, managed to finish in 2:08. I was grinding 2:10 in my best pre-ride, but turned crank in anger to a 1:56 finish. It hurt, but felt great.

On a side note, I managed to beat somebody by two seconds. I passed him on the track down to the finish line. Again, somebody thought the race was over at the top of the hill, and I just kept turning a big gear right past him. Tee hee hee!

A few pix here.

<>Tuesday Night Ride Info!

Briones Tuesday Night Rides are happening! We ride at Briones on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month. Park on Sage Dr. 'cause the gates close at sunset. We're meeting at the Alhambra gate trailhead at 6:30PM sharp! Plans are always a bit up in the air, so check the NorCal forum on mtbr.com for the latest plans.

We do not ride on the 1st Tuesday of the month as that is our night to support the Bicycle Trails Council of the East Bay.

3rd and 5th Tuesdays are away rides. We like to expand our horizons. These are the nights that we explore other area parks.

If you would like to suggest a ride for the 3rd or 5th Tuesdays, contact danger@brionesmafia.com!
